Separate crashes cause delays, knocks down road sign on I-85 in Gwinnett County

The crashes happened on both the northbound and southbound lanes on I-85 in Norcross.

Early Sunday morning, two separate crashes on Interstate 85 in Norcross brought traffic to a standstill and triggered extensive cleanup operations that extended well into the day. The incidents occurred simultaneously on both the northbound and southbound lanes of I-85, creating widespread disruption for motorists traveling through Gwinnett County. According to local police, one crash completely shut down southbound I-85 between Beaver Ruin Road and Pleasantdale Road, forcing emergency responders to divert all southbound traffic onto Beaver Ruin Road. The second crash caused significant delays on northbound I-85 between Jimmy Carter Boulevard and Indian Trail Lilburn Road. The northbound incident was severe enough to damage infrastructure, bringing down the road sign that hangs over the northbound lanes. The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) reported that while the southbound lanes have since reopened, some lane closures remain in effect as cleanup crews continue working at the scene. Authorities have not yet released information about the types of vehicles involved or whether any injuries resulted from either crash. Motorists are being urged to seek alternative routes while work continues in the area.

Location and Infrastructure

Interstate 85 through Norcross serves as a critical transportation artery in Gwinnett County, connecting the northeastern suburbs to downtown Atlanta and carrying tens of thousands of vehicles daily. The affected stretch between Beaver Ruin Road and Indian Trail Lilburn Road is a heavily traveled corridor that experiences significant congestion during peak hours. This section of I-85 features multiple lanes in each direction and numerous entrance and exit ramps serving the dense commercial and residential areas of Norcross. The proximity to major intersections including Jimmy Carter Boulevard and Pleasantdale Road makes this area particularly vulnerable to traffic backups when incidents occur. The damage to overhead signage on the northbound lanes indicates the severity of at least one of the collisions and highlights the infrastructure challenges along this busy interstate corridor. GDOT maintains extensive traffic monitoring and management systems along this route, but simultaneous crashes on both directional lanes present exceptional challenges for traffic flow management.

Legal Rights and Considerations

Georgia law requires drivers involved in accidents resulting in injury, death, or property damage exceeding $500 to report the incident to law enforcement. Under Georgia's comparative negligence statute (O.C.G.A. § 51-12-33), injured parties may seek compensation for damages even if they bear partial responsibility for an accident, provided their fault does not exceed 50%. Victims of highway accidents may be entitled to compensation for medical expenses, lost wages, property damage, and pain and suffering. Georgia's statute of limitations for personal injury claims is generally two years from the date of the accident (O.C.G.A. § 9-3-33), making timely consultation with legal counsel important for preserving rights. Interstate accidents often involve complex liability questions, particularly when multiple vehicles or potential infrastructure defects are involved. Georgia requires minimum liability insurance coverage of $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident for bodily injury, though such minimums may prove insufficient in serious collisions. Injured parties should document all medical treatment and preserve evidence while avoiding statements to insurance adjusters without legal guidance.

An experienced Norcross car crash lawyer will handle all aspects of the legal claim.
