Motorcyclist airlifted to hospital after crash

A pickup truck was stopped in the road for a hazard when a motorcyclist rear ended the truck.

A 21-year-old Cedar Grove man sustained serious injuries Saturday morning when his motorcycle rear-ended a stopped pickup truck on County Road D west of Six Mile Road in the Town of Holland, Sheboygan County. Sheboygan County Emergency responded to the two-vehicle crash around 7:00 a.m. The pickup truck driver had stopped in the roadway due to a hazard when the motorcyclist collided with the rear of the vehicle. Emergency responders determined the severity of the motorcyclist's injuries required immediate air transport, and he was airlifted to Froedtert Hospital for treatment. The pickup truck driver was uninjured in the collision. The incident highlights the vulnerability of motorcyclists on rural county roads, where stopped vehicles and roadway hazards can create dangerous situations. Emergency medical services, including aeromedical transport, responded quickly to provide critical care to the injured rider during the crucial first hour following the accident.

Location and Infrastructure

County Road D in the Town of Holland represents a typical rural Wisconsin county highway that serves both local traffic and connects to the broader Sheboygan County road network. The Town of Holland was settled by Dutch immigrants in the 1840s and is located along the western shore of Lake Michigan in Sheboygan County, with County Road D serving as an important east-west corridor through this agricultural and residential area. The intersection area near Six Mile Road features mixed rural development with farms, residences, and open land that can create varying traffic patterns throughout the day. Rural county roads like this often lack the sophisticated traffic control devices found on major highways, relying instead on standard stop signs, yield signs, and warning signage. The nature of the terrain and land use in this area can create visibility challenges, particularly during early morning hours when this accident occurred, and roadway hazards such as farm equipment, wildlife, or debris may require vehicles to stop unexpectedly.

Legal Rights and Considerations

Under Wisconsin law, motorcyclists involved in accidents have specific rights and legal protections that differ from standard motor vehicle regulations. Wisconsin requires motorcyclists to maintain minimum insurance coverage including $25,000 for bodily injury to one person, $50,000 for multiple injuries, and $10,000 for property damage, along with mandatory uninsured motorist coverage. Accident victims have important time limitations for pursuing legal action, as Wisconsin's statute of limitations provides a three-year deadline from the date of the accident to file personal injury claims. The state operates under a modified comparative fault system, meaning injury victims can recover damages as long as they are not more than 50% at fault for the accident. Compensation in motorcycle accident cases may include medical expenses, lost wages, pain and suffering, property damage, and future medical care costs. Given the severity of injuries common in motorcycle accidents, victims should be aware that initial medical evaluations may not reveal the full extent of internal injuries, brain trauma, or long-term complications that could significantly impact claim values.
